Laurie Dake Challenge

Laurence Patrick (Laurie) Dake was a preeminent scientist and renowned author, paving the way for the education of new generations of reservoir engineers. He made great contributions to the petroleum engineering profession, and in evoking his exceptional creative spirit, EAGE is pleased to name the FIELD Challenge after him. The challenge aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between geoscience and engineering students at universities. Participating teams, which must be multidisciplinary and include up to one PhD student, are tasked with integrating various fields of study to tackle complex problems. In 2023, the finals took place at the EAGE Annual Conference in Vienna, where a select number of teams from a global pool of over 30 contenders presented their proposals for geothermal development in the Vienna Basin.

Our participation in the Laurie Dake Challenge involved developing a geothermal development plan for the Vienna basin using a dataset provided by the OMV company. We analysed and interpreted the exploration dataset, formulated a comprehensive field development plan, and presented the work to an expert jury. Our outstanding efforts led us to win the competition.

It’s certainly a commendable achievement to have your victory and photographs featured in the First Break publication, which is a leading source of information for the geoscience and engineering community.
